Erupture
Nicole Banowetz
-
Erupture is an inflatable sculpture that depicts a surreal landscape of microscopic lifeforms. Their enlarged presence makes the installation feel calm, comforting, yet disorienting. The arrangement of these inflatables recalls dioramas from biology class, with large groupings of these odd forms bursting at delicate seams.
-
Erupture was sewn together entirely by hand.
Erupture deals with themes such as natural growth and decay while evoking feelings of struggle and vulnerability.
Powered by large air blowers, Nicole Banowetz’s works are fluid, when refilled they often inflate differently, tilting and shifting in new ways.
This artwork, like many of her sculptures, is white, offering the visitor the chance to fill in colors with their imagination.

She empowers objects by embellishing them by adding protective layers that through time become destructive. Her forms move freely between growth and decay blurring the distinction between decoration and disease.
