On a Human Scale is a project which unites voices and faces of the world through technology. The project started as an experiment, by filming everyday New Yorkers singing. The individual voices are woven into an interactive instrument that visitors are invited to play. Each visitor who participates in playing the instrument brings the immersive audio-visual installation to life.
—On a Human Scale es un proyecto que une voces y rostros del mundo a través de la tecnología. El proyecto comenzó como un experimento, filmando a neoyorquinos comunes y corrientes cantando. Las voces individuales se entrelazan en un instrumento interactivo que los visitantes están invitados a tocar. Cada visitante que participa tocando el instrumento da vida a la instalación audiovisual inmersiva.

On a Human Scale is an ongoing mission to create a fully playable instrument of humanity.
To engage participants, Matthew asked strangers on the streets of New York to take part.
This project started as a 2 octave prototype using a toy piano. It has grown to 4 octaves or 49 keys housed in an antique harpsichord.
The piece has been developed in Guadalajara, Mexico and New York City, chronicling voices from around the world into melodic scales and percussive instruments.
The artist was inspired to create this piece as he was walking through Shanghai listening to Philip Glass’ "Einstein on the Beach." The crowds of faces and the repetition of the choir in his music fused together at that moment. Matthew recognized humanity as an interworking instrument, and each of us is a note.
Matthew hopes On a Human Scale will continue to grow, creating instruments of people from all different backgrounds and walks of life.
On a Human Scale debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival 2014.

On a Human Scale es una misión continua para crear un instrumento de la humanidad totalmente interpretable.Para involucrar a los participantes, Matthew pidió a desconocidos en las calles de Nueva York que formaran parte.
Este proyecto comenzó como un prototipo de 2 octavas usando un piano de juguete. Ha crecido a 4 octavas o 49 teclas alojadas en un clavecín antiguo.
La pieza se ha desarrollado en Guadalajara, México y en la ciudad de Nueva York, catalogando voces de todo el mundo en escalas melódicas e instrumentos de percusión.
El artista se inspiró para crear esta pieza mientras caminaba por Shanghái escuchando "Einstein on the Beach" de Philip Glass. Las multitudes de rostros y la repetición del coro en su música se fusionaron en ese momento. Matthew reconoció a la humanidad como un instrumento interconectado, y cada uno de nosotros es una nota.
Matthew espera que On a Human Scale siga creciendo, creando instrumentos de personas de todos los diferentes orígenes y ámbitos de la vida.
